Practice schedule changes: The end of the long course season and the attendant flurry of championship meets means a change in practice schedules.
ICE
swimmers who have qualified for ISI Long Course Championships:
Practice for Morays and Eels
will continue at City Park pool until Tue. July 30. Eels and Morays who
have qualified for ISI Champs will be able to come in July 29 and July 30 from
3:45 to 4:45pm to work on relay exchanges, starts, and turns if they wish.
All ISI Championship Team swimmers will have practice at Mercer Park on July
31st and Aug. 1st at the following times:
10 & Under and 11-12 swimmers - 3:30 to 4:30pm
13-14 and Senior - 4 to 5:30pm
These practices will entail a short warm-up, work on starts and relay
exchanges, a short cool down, and a team meeting.
Swimmers who are pre-qualified (already have attained AAA times before ISI
Champs) to go to the Central Zone Championships can contact Coach Donald P.
Spellman on additional practice times for the week preceding ISI Champs and the
week preceding Zones.
All ICE swimmers who are not qualified (no "Q" times) to swim at ISI
Championships in their respective age-groups will not have practice after July
26th. Regionals will be the last meet for any Q - swimmer and they will
be done until the Short Course season begins in September.
Any questions - contact Coach Don at 351-3336 or via e-mail at SwimICE@aol.com
Watermelon night: On
Thursday July 25th there will be a watermelon feed for all swimmers
going to Amana for the Regionals.
Beginning at 5:15 PM at Mercer, there will be watermelon to eat and eels
to decorate. Everyone is welcome to
share in the fun!
Mock Swim Meet: On Thursday July 25th we will hold a mock swim meet to test the new timing console. The testing will take place during practice- roughly 4:00 PM to 5:15 PM or so. If you are interested in getting some “hands-on” experience with timing systems drop by Thursday afternoon.
2nd Annual Car wash fundraiser: The car wash is scheduled for Saturday July 27th from 12:30-4:30 PM at the Hills Bank parking lot in Coralville. As of today we could still use more swimmers and parents to help out. Contact Bryan at (BLawler@universalclimate.com) for more information.
ICE Picnic: On
Tuesday July 30th at the shelter in Mercer Park, the swim club will
be holding a picnic. Come join us beginning at 5:30 PM as we celebrate the
ending of the long course season. Each
training group is asked to bring specific items: Frost –salad,
Cubes - main dish, Morays – dessert, Eels - vegetable/potatoes. Please bring your own plates, utensils,
& cups. The Club will supply
drinks.
Long Course Championship update: The big meet is less than three weeks away! There are still many volunteer slots to be filled if we are going to successfully run this meet. 400 swimmers, their families, coaches, and other interested parties are depending on the Club to put on a good show. If you haven’t yet been asked to help out- you will be soon. Putting on a three-day meet is a complex affair but a manageable one if everyone steps up to do his or her part. If you have any questions about the Meet feel free to contact our Meet Directors- Jan (BLawler251@aol.com) or Vicki (cvmcbreen@juno.com).
Short course season tidbits: The short course swim season is set to begin Tuesday September 3rd. Practice times will likely be similar to last year and will be posted as they become finalized. The Stroke Clinic will begin September 9th, running for three weeks on M, W, & F nights. If you know of anyone interested in joining the Club have them call the ICE office at 351-3336 or checkout our website (www.iceels.org) for more information.
Stroke and Turn judges: Here is another installment from former ICE President and current Co-Chair of the ISI Officials Committee, Bryan Lawler.
In last month’s article we got the swimmers into the water and racing. We now turn to the role of the Stroke and Turn Judges.
The Stroke and Turn Judges are responsible for ensuring that the swimmers comply with the USA Swimming rules applicable for the stroke being swum. Before the meet begins, the Meet Referee will assign the jurisdiction for each Stroke and Turn Judge. A Stroke and Turn Judge may only issue a disqualification for a rule infraction that occurs in his or her jurisdiction. Assuming there are a sufficient number of officials, a Stroke Judge’s jurisdiction covers one half the lanes in the pool between the backstroke flags; and a Turn Judge’s jurisdiction is one or more (usually more) lanes between the backstroke flags and the wall. When there are too few officials, the Stroke Judge may also have to cover turns for at least the outside lanes.
A Stroke Judge will walk along the side of the pool observing the swimmers in the lanes within his or her jurisdiction. This judge is watching for proper arm and kicking action. In addition, in the freestyle, butterfly, and backstroke events, the Stroke Judge must also watch that some part of each swimmer’s body breaks the water surface at or before the 15-meter mark after the start and after each turn. You have probably noticed the orange cones on each side of the pool marking the 15-meter point. The lane lines are also required to have distinctive floats marking this distance. During the race, the Stroke Judge will normally walk so as to stay abreast or slightly behind the swimmers in order to best observe each swimmer’s stroke.
A Turn Judge is stationed at one end of the pool (they get less exercise than stroke judges) and is centered on the lanes within his or her jurisdiction. As noted above, the Turn Judge will normally be responsible for watching the swimmers from the backstroke flags in to the wall, through the turn and back to the flags. This judge is watching for the proper stroke form, as does the Stroke Judge; but the Turn Judge’s primary responsibility is to observe that the swimmers comply with the turning rules for each stroke.
As with the Meet Referee and Starter, the Stroke and Turn Judges are present to ensure that the competition is fair for all the swimmers. This requires good positioning as discussed above and equal observation of all lanes within a jurisdiction. A judge must not focus on a swimmer in only some the lanes, but rather give equal attention to every lane. This includes watching lanes with no swimmer so that swimmers in heats that are not full do not get more scrutiny! Fairness also requires that the Stroke and Turn Judges be evenly spaced around the pool so that swimmers in parts of the pool do not get more scrutiny than swimmers in other parts of the pool.
Stoke and Turn Judges have the authority to issue disqualifications for infractions committed within their respective jurisdictions. When a Judge observes a rules infraction, he or she must immediately raise one hand. If an official does not raise a hand, then no disqualification can be made. This is to help ensure an official is certain an infraction occurred. Because disqualification is a drastic result, officials need to be 100 percent certain, and the benefit of the doubt always goes to the swimmer.
Officials are on the deck to help ensure that safe, fair and equitable competitive conditions exist for each swimmer at every meet. Well-trained and dedicated officials are essential to help provide our athletes the best competitive swimming experience possible. If you are interested in learning more about officiating, please contact me at blawler@universalclimate.com or call me at 354-9005.

Final notes from the Communications Chair: It is hard to believe that the Long Course season is nearly over. There is a lot going on over the next few weeks and the days will pass quickly. During this time and over the break between seasons information will continue to be shared. E-mails will be generated, notes will be posted at Mercer and Coralville, and, as always, feel free to checkout our website (www.iceels.org) to get the latest on what’s new with the Club.
