Coach’s Corner
Welcome back for the 2003 Short-Course season! ICE enjoyed a great summer of fast swimming and the coaching staff is geared up for continued success. There are some changes you may notice for the upcoming season – some small, some big – but all of them should help foster future success for our club.
First – Matt Hamer has been hired as the ICE Head Age –Group Coach. Matt will be in charge of the Frost and Cube groups and the primary coach for most of the 12& under swimmers in the ICE program. This position was created to provide a more cohesive flow from our age-group training groups to our senior program (Moray and Eels). Matt will be assisting me with my administrative duties regarding the Frost and Cubes and providing leadership needed for a strong age-group program. Matt has been involved with swimming in Iowa City for a long time. He was a former member of the Iowa City Swim Club, City High Swim Team, and he competed for the now defunct University of Northern Iowa men’s program in college. He is a former Iowa HS State Champ in the 100 Breaststroke (1995) and a former Junior Nationals qualifier. Currently Matt resides in Iowa City and is also involved as asst. coach for both the IC West High girls’ team and the IC City/West boys program. Matt just completed a second stint on the Iowa Zones team staff and was a major contributor to helping ICE win the 2001 Long Course Age-Group title.
Second – ICE purchased a new timing system over the summer with the help of the Iowa City School district. The new system is from the Daktronics Company of North America and got its first test at our recent ISI Long Course State Championships. This new system uses a state of the art suction touch pad that helps prevent slippage and ensures that the pad stays in place for less timing errors and more accurate splits. Look for this new system to be in use at Iowa City HS meets and at our Weber Invite in December.
Third – ICE will have team records posted at the beginning of each season for all of our age groups and for senior swimmers as well. These records will include past results for ICE swimmers and those of former Iowa City Swim Club (ICSC) members. This will give of our swimmers something to shoot for at the beginning of each season and we will update them on a monthly basis. Make sure you thank Jan Lawler for all the hard work she put into this wild goose chase type of project this past year.
Fourth – We will have a whole new board so make sure you check the website for updates concerning committees and board meetings and get to know the new ICE Board of Directors. ICE is only as strong as it’s volunteers and our swimmers and parents are some of the most active in the state. Make sure to let your voice be heard and to take an active role in helping our club stay on top!
Fifth – We are going to have new awards at the end of each season. These will include Hardest Worker (male and female for all groups), the “Mental Toughness” award, the Most Inspirational, and Swimmers of the Season (male and female for all groups). Work hard and you could wind up with one of these at the end of the season.
See you at the pool!

A note from our Club president: Welcome to all the swimmers and families who
will be with us for the Short Course season! We had a great long course
summer season and look forward to a great fall and winter season for ICE.
September is the month of registration for returning swimmers and stroke clinic
for new swimmers. If anyone has any questions about registration or club
procedures, talk to Don, other parents at the pool or consider attending one of
the ICE board meetings to learn more about the club. Meetings are open to
everyone and are generally held the first Monday of the month at Mercer, but
check the ICE website for the exact date and time of meetings. The swim club is
a non-profit organization run by volunteers and we encourage all families to
sign-up at registration for a committee they are interested in getting involved
with during the year and encourage everyone to participate in the numerous
activities we offer. Communication is important for the swimmers and
families, so please check your folders at the pool weekly, check the website
often and if you have an e-mail address, sign up to be on the ICE list for
announcements, reminders, etc. Again, welcome to the 2002-2003 short course
season!

President
Long Course Championship thank-you: Thank
you volunteers! A big thanks to all the ICE families who volunteered for
the state championships we hosted in August! We couldn't have had a
successful meet without all the hours contributed to the meet by our
volunteers! The time you spent at the meet working or the food you
prepared for the meet were appreciated by all! We received many positive
comments from other clubs and coaches and everyone that helped with the meet
contributed to its success. The profits haven't been determined yet, but it
will be our biggest fundraiser for the year and the entire club will benefit
from it during the upcoming year. Thanks again!

Blanca also finished second in the 100 Fly, third in the 200 IM, and fourth in the 50 Fly. Way to go Blanca! ICE Head Coach Donald P. Spellman also participated in the meet recording three top three finishes in the breaststroke events. Results can be found at www.usms.org
Short Course Registration: Beginning September 3rd and running until September 5th ICE will be holding short course registration at Mercer Park. From about 6:00 PM until 8:30 PM folks will be on hand to help swimmers get ready to return to the pool. Please remember that you must be registered before you can swim with the team. To simplify the process, the Annual USA Swimming form and a unified Registration form will soon be available on our website (www.iceels.org) Filling these forms out ahead of time will make the entire procedure easier for everyone.
Meet work
requirement: On August 6th the ICE Board voted
to install a new meet work requirement for all ICE families. During each swim
season every family will be asked to work several sessions at the Meets we
host. In the Short Course season we host a single Meet and ask that each family
work two sessions. During the Long
Course season we host two Meets and ask that each family work five
sessions. For each session not worked a
$20.00 charge will be added to the next ICE bill. The idea is not to raise additional
funds for the Club or to somehow punish non-contributors but to underscore the
importance of helping with the hosting of our Club’s swim meets.
Swim Meets serve several functions-
primarily they provide swimmers an opportunity to compete in a fun and fair
environment. Meets also serve as Club
fundraisers. In our case, Meets
generated some $16,000 last year.
Compared to income from monthly dues- some $55,000 it quickly becomes
apparent that hosting swim meets is a big benefit to the Club and all of its
swimmers. Without Swim Meets as a source of funding our only option to maintain
the Club at its’ present level would be a fairly major increase in dues.
As a Club, we consistently face a problem of getting enough people to
assist with the swim meets we host. Especially the Long Course Championships in
early August. This is a very big event and even in the best of circumstances a
trying experience. Without adequate
Club support it becomes very difficult for those who do help as the work needed
to put on such a Meet has to be completed regardless of the level of
support.
Of the possible alternatives proposed and considered, a Meet work
requirement seemed the most relevant to our situation. Such requirements are pretty standard with
swim clubs throughout the nation as a way of dealing with the rather
complicated nature of hosting swim meets.
The details regarding the work requirement are still evolving. Rest assured though that no one will be
calling you to officiate or operate the timing equipment. People are needed to do those tasks but the
Club also needs help with the 101 other jobs associated with hosting a Meet-
from food preparation and seeking sponsorships to facility set-up and timing. Many jobs need to be done during the Meet
but others can be accomplished prior to or after the Meet- often at home. There really is a role for everyone to play
and for the Club to continue along its’ successful path everyone’s help will be
needed.
A final note from
communications: With the start of a new swim season it is
important to once again remind everyone of the importance of good
communications. We do make an effort to
have important information available to the Club membership as soon as possible. A key resource in this mix is e-mail. If you have access to e-mail keep us abreast
of any changes in your address, etc. An
awful lot of information is sent out via this format- from the monthly
newsletter to updates on practice changes and the like. Another resource is our website at www.iceels.org. There you can find information about the Club, competitive
swimming in general, and team supported swim meets. Any questions or comments regarding communications can be
directed to Kelly at keleyn@inav.net.
